Plastic sprinkler pipe connections?

what is the secret to connecting black plastic yard sprinkler pipe so it does not leak? I connect the pipe to the hard gray plastic elbows by heating the plastic pipe, using thread and pipe cement. But even so, I still get some drips under pressure. I asked a plumber and he said, "don't use that cheap crap." But this is what the entire sprinkler system is made out of, so I have to use it for now. Any suggestions for a perfect, leak-free connection?????
