It takes much more than just reselling software licenses to create a scalable, high-margin AI firm. MSPs must create an end-to-end service framework that smoothly transports clients from baseline preparedness to deployment and beyond by combining technical support, proactive security, user enablement, and strategic advising to make this a recurring success.
Taming the "Shadow AI" Beast
The unapproved use of consumer-grade AI technologies in the workplace, or "shadow AI," is already a serious issue. According to industry data, employees in up to 90% of firms routinely integrate company data into personal AI applications to expedite operations.
The consequences for security are terrifying. When confidential or secret company data is fed into public versions of ChatGPT or Claude, information is sent straight to servers outside the organization's control, presenting a significant risk of data leakage.
The MSP providing RMM tools and PSA software has an obligation to inform SMB leadership about these backdoors as a trusted advisor. Small companies implicitly rely on their MSP to secure their perimeter. If a client has a data breach due to an employee uploading a customer database to an unmanaged web tool, they will initially seek assistance from their MSP.
Providers must clearly identify the hazards, keep an eye out for unauthorized AI traffic on client networks, identify vulnerabilities, and assist leadership in developing a practical acceptable-use policy to reduce this.
Redirecting consumers to corporate-grade alternatives, like Microsoft Copilot, is the most sensible course of action. The main dangers of Shadow AI are immediately eliminated because Copilot's direct integration with Microsoft 365 ensures that all user prompts and organizational data stay completely within the company's current tenant borders.
